With all the excitement that blooms around food and drink in springtime, there was only one question on our minds… what was baking on the high street?
On paper, bakery trends appear to be contradicting themselves. While some research suggests consumers are after delicious, indulgent and outright extravagant bakes, other reports say they’re looking for affordable and comforting alternatives.
But, if one thing’s for sure, the days when we only indulge in flaky pastries with fruit and jam at a continental breakfast are gone. As predicted by The Food People, croissants are proving to be an excellent carrier for savoury flavours, wonderfully versatile across different dayparts! From brunch through to dinner, you can guarantee there will be a pastry out there for you that will hit the spot (and not just your sweet tooth!).
We were blown away on this food tour by the versatility of the bakery industry. From buns from home’s ‘double-baked’ pastries leading the fight against food waste (currently, only 42% of UK bakeries have a food waste reduction plan!)1 to Arôme’s hybrid indulgent desserts, it’s amazing how a single bake or bun can be transformed into such a wide range of sweet and savoury treats. We just can’t wait to see what the bakery industry does next!
“Nostalgic flavours. Flavour fusions. Food-waste-fighting bakes. Down-right extravagance. This bakery food tour had it all and left us all with an indulgent, lingering aftertaste.”
